Our Writing Approach
Underpinned by our core reading spine, St Margaret's uses a 3-phased approach to support the teaching of writing. In phase 1, children deconstruct texts, considering the audience and purpose for writing. Children will identify key text-level, sentence-level and word-level features at this stage. As part of this phase, children may also look at a number of additional WAGELLs to support their understanding of a particular text type. In phase 2, the skill building phase, children develop their vocabulary knowledge and use of key grammatical features linked to the text type studied. In the final phase, following exposure to modelled or guided writes, children follow a plan, draft and edit cycle, centred around the key learning from phases 1 and 2.
