Speaking & Listening
'The curriculum should provide opportunities for pupils to practise, refine and apply their spoken language knowledge and skills. Pupils’ study of spoken language should become more formalised over time, including using appropriate grammar and register for different audiences and purposes.'
Ofsted- Telling the Story: the English Subject Report (2024)
At St Margaret's, we recognise the critical role developing speaking and listening plays in developing pupils who can articulate their learning, develop their ideas and critically reflect on their experiences. These skills can be applied within their English study and across their wider curriculum learning. Through the explicit teaching of speaking and listening, we aim to create articulate learners who can work independently and collaboratively to express themselves with confidence, clarity and coherence.
Implementation
We deliver our speaking and listening curriculum in the following ways:
- Through exploratory talk which begins in Reception
- Through class assemblies
- Through partner, trio and group talk in daily curriculum learning
- Through our school lesson structure, where lessons begin with revisiting prior learning and end with reflections on learning
- Through presentations in class to peers
- Through showcases of learning to parents
- Through circle time discussions and debates
- Through videos shared on our school website and social media
Our teaching framework includes four distinct areas which are used to develop our pupils:
