We expect children in Year 6 to read at least 4 times per week at home. Ideally, reading sessions should last around 20-30 minutes. Reading records should be signed by an adult weekly. Children who read in line with these expectations will receive 5 Dojos each week.

By the time your child has begun Key Stage 2, they should be able to fully decode what they read and have strategies to decode unfamiliar and more complex words that they meet in their reading.

Once your child is able to decode, reading in school and at home should focus primarily on reading for understanding. This includes:

• Understanding the meaning of new vocabulary
• Reading with a fluid and expressive voice (fluency)
• Developing comprehension of their reading with texts of growing complexity
• Developing their reading for pleasure, exploring authors, genres and themes that speak to them

It is important that your child continues to read with an adult as frequently as possible throughout Key Stage 2. As a school, we appreciate that this can sometimes be difficult, but please try to prioritise reading with your child as much as you are able.
