Work hard, dream big and never give up.

Reading Expectations

We expect children in Year 1 to read at least 4 times per week at home. Ideally, reading sessions should last around 10-15 minutes. Reading records should be signed by an adult weekly. Children who read in line with these expectations will receive 5 Dojos each week.

In Year 1, your child is continuing to work through the Supersonic Phonic Friends programme, which began in Reception. As they continue to learn to decode, your child will be sent home each week with a book from the school book stock which has been closely-matched to your child's reading ability. This means that the book will be fully-decodable. The focus of any home reading is to:

  • Allow your child the opportunity to practise and reinforce their phonics learning
  • Develop reading with a fluid and expressive voice
  • Begin to develop a comprehension of what they are reading

Your child will bring home the same fully-decodable book each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This is to allow your child the opportunity for repeated practise of their reading skills.

Every Thursday, your child will bring home an additional 'sharing book' from the school library. This book will not be fully-decodable, and is designed to encourage reading for pleasure. This book should be read by or with an adult, and returned to school each Monday.

It is important that your child continues to read with an adult as frequently as possible throughout Key Stage 2. As a school, we appreciate that this can sometimes be difficult, but please try to prioritise reading with your child as much as you are able.

Throughout the year, we will be running a number of reading workshops for parents to support with home reading and reading strategies. Please look out for these dates in our school newsletters.
