Work hard, dream big and never give up.

Our Reading Expecations

We expect children in Reception to read at least 4 times per week at home. Ideally, reading sessions should last around 10 minutes. Reading records should be signed by an adult weekly. Children who read in line with these expectations will receive 5 Dojos each week.

Your child will first be introduced to wordless books. A wordless book engages young children in comprehension, critical thinking, storytelling and expands speech, language and communication. Wordless books also develop a greater understanding of story structure. Your child will learn four phonetic sounds each week. They will learn to sound and blend. Their reading book will match they phonetic knowledge and reading skills.

Through daily reading children will:

  • Understanding the meaning of new vocabulary
  • Reading with a fluid and expressive voice (fluency)
  • Developing comprehension of their reading with texts of growing complexity
  • Developing their reading for pleasure, exploring authors, genres and themes that speak to them

It is important that your child reads with an adult as frequently as possible throughout Reception both their reading books and sharing books for pleasure. As a school, we appreciate that this can sometimes be difficult, but please try to prioritise reading with your child as much as you are able.

Throughout the year, we will be running a number of reading workshops for parents to support with home reading and reading strategies. Please look out for these dates in our school newsletters.

Reading:

Please try to read each night even if its two or three pages. Daily reading is fundamental when learning to read and write. It is also good to read over a book again to recap and embed previous learning and skills. Children will read in school with an adult twice a week. Books will be changed twice a week.

Books will only be changed if children have read at home and their reading record has been signed by an adult.

Library books:

Children will choose a new library book each Friday. They will choose from a carefully selected EYFS appropriate section of books. Library books will be changed each Friday, please make sure library books are in school. If library books are not returned a reminder will be sent home. Children will not be able to choose a new book until previously borrowed books are returned.
