In Year 1 we need to be able to:

  • Recognise numbers 0-100 and identity one more and one less than these numbers as well as being able to count to 100 and back.
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Know numbers bonds to 10 and to 20 and the related subtractions for these.
  • Be able to write the numbers to 20 in both numerals and words. 
  • Be able to add and subtract one and two digit numbers from 20.
  • Be able to multiply and divide using pictorials and objects to support. 
  • Tell the time on both digital and analogue clocks for half last and o'clock as well as draw the relevant hands.
  • Be able to order the days of the week and months of the year and use language related to this. 
  • Be able to recognise halves and quarters.
  • Recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes.
  • Be able to compare length, weight, height and capacity.
  • Describe positions and make objects move in full, half, quarter turns. 


In Reception we need to be able to:

  • Count from 0-20 and back.
  • Match the number to the pictorial representation. 
  • Place then hummers to 20 in order.
  • Say one more and one less than numbers to 20. 
  • Be able to add and subtract single numbers by counting on or back to find the answer. 
  • Solve problems by halving, doubling and sharing. 
  • Use everyday language related to time, money, size, weight, capacity and position. Children should also be able to compare these to help solve problems. 
  • Create and recognise patterns.
  • Be able to recognise shapes and use mathematicians langue related to their characteristics.
